Just before the country’s Independence Day, President Rodrigo Duterte arrived at the Villamor Airbase in order to lead the arrival ceremony for eight of the 13 Marines slain in the fighting in Marawi on Friday. The president also extended his condolences to the families by staying with them and comforting them for around 30 minutes in which the relatives became emotional.

Afterwards, the president skipped the interviews from the media and went straight to the Philippine Marines headquarters in Fort Bonifacio, this time to visit the wake of two slain Marines whose remains were flown in on Saturday.

Meanwhile, reports say that three other marines were also killed on Friday and their remains are now with their families.

“Your sons, brothers, or husbands brought honor to our country,” Marine commandant Brig. Gen. Emmanuel Salamat told the grieving families of the dead Marines.

Thirteen Marines were confirmed to have been killed in action and 40 have been reported wounded during the fight between the government forces and Maute Terrorist Group on Friday. These include the Marines who led the discovery of the cash and cheque worth ₱80-M.

According to military officials, the terrorist group allegedly used human shields which made their efforts more difficult since they are still prioritizing the safety of the civilians amidst the battle.
