Ever since President Rodrigo Duterte declared martial law in the southern region of Mindanao, the Maute group has become a hot topic for netizens to discuss. Also known as the Islamic State of Lanao, the Maute group became a noticeable threat after they engaged with military and police forces in Marawi City of the Lanao del Sur province. Fights with the government forces ravaged the city – forcing the president to make the decision to lock down the entire region under martial law. Pres. Duterte said he did this to make sure no other rebellious actions and terroristic attacks could be conducted elsewhere in the Philippines. This was an especially prudent move after the Maute pledged their allegiance to ISIS. Many people were confused about why the Maute group would attack Marawi City, when 97% of the residents were Muslims just like they were. According to the Maute group, they’re fighting in the name of ‘Jihad’. The term is now saturated in mainstream media and misunderstood solely as a Muslim’s call to war. This isn’t entirely true. For Muslims, jihad doesn’t just mean war, it’s a personal struggle one must endure for the sake of their religion, offered in Allah’s (god) name. Like their roots in the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), the Maute group seeks an autonomous region for Muslims. They do so through guerrilla warfare and terror tactics. For this reason, they have been branded terrorists and a threat to national security. A video has gone viral, shared by Facebook page Magodas Ako, catching a glimpse of the Maute group’s everyday life. A young fighter was featured in the video, singing the Maranao song. Here’s what the song essentially the song means:

“I’m so lucky that I will die Saheed (when a person dies during jihad) oh my parents, I’ll be living in paradise with the midadari (woman in paradise) don’t heal my wounds and place my firearms beside me, oh father just forgive (me.)”
