In the early hours of June 2, no one expected that a man wearing a sweatshirt with a backpack would start a series of events that would instill fear in the Filipino people.
A man casually walked into Resorts World Manila in Pasay City and incited chaos that caused the death of 38 people, including himself.
Many people were terrified when the gunman started to fire gunshots inside the popular entertainment complex. The incident brought panic among the people inside the building. Because of his appearance, some witnesses claimed that he was a member of the international terrorist group, ISIS. However, the Philippine National Police Chief Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa is convinced that the isolated case was a poorly planned out and botched robbery incident.
To give light to what actually transpired, the management of the famous hotel-casino released footage taken by their CCTV cameras. The media briefing led by Resorts World Chief Security Officer Armeen Gomez gave the detailed information from the arrival of the attacker until the moment he was shot by one of the hotel’s security guards.
The initial video showed that the gunman disembarked from a taxi. He casually entered the prestigious hotel with only one security officer meeting him. The officials claimed that they are already investigating the taxi driver who brought the gunman to Resorts World.
When he successfully entered the hotel, he did not pass through the metal detector. One official attempted to stop him but he showed them his Armalite rifle and his full combat regalia. He fired several warning shots and burned gaming tables and slot machines on the second floor of the building.
He then forcefully entered a storage room and grabbed P131.1 million worth of casino chips. Officials then claimed that this move established the robbery angle. At this point, the authorities already followed him and conducted surveillance on his movement. One security guard exchanged fire with him and wounded the attacker.
After the security personnel wounded the attacker, he went inside another room where CNN reported that he shot and burned himself. Moments after, more police and members of the SWAT team responded. They confirmed that the attacker committed suicide.
Southern Police District chief Tomas Apolinario claimed that they have identified the gunman but refused to release the details as they cited that investigations are still ongoing.
